Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 - July 29, 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter. Representative works include "Starry Night", self-portrait series, sunflower series, etc.

Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in a Protestant priest's family in Zindert, the Dutch countryside. In his early years, he worked as a clerk and a business broker, and also as a missionary in the mining area. Finally, he devoted himself to painting. His early painting style was realistic, influenced by Dutch traditional painting and French realism school. In 1886, he came to Paris, met Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters, and came into contact with the works of Japanese Ukiyo-e. The expansion of his horizons changed his painting style. In 1888, he came to Arles, a small town in the south of France, to create "The Suspension Bridge of Arr." In the same year, he met the painter Paul Gauguin, but due to the conflict of characters and differences of ideas between the two, the cooperation soon failed. Since then, Van Gogh's madness (some records are "epilepsy") often occurs, but he still insists on painting when he is sane. In 1889, he created "Starry Night". In July 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in insanity at the age of 37.

Character evaluation

"Van Gogh had a great influence on the later Fauvism and Expressionism, and his artistic achievements had a greater effect on his successors than Manet and Cezanne." (Italian art critic Venturi commented)

"Van Gogh's entire life was submerged in art. His works of various eras are completely records of the life of an era. Among artists who live by art, it can be said to be an extreme example." (Chinese painter Feng Zikai comment)
